NEW BORN

... and what YOU can do about it!
Compared to adults and older children, new born babies consume more food and breathe more air relative to their body weight. Also, their skin surface in proportion to their body volume is much greater. Not surprisingly then, babies are at a far greater risk for experiencing lead symptoms caused by their immediate environment.
Imagine that the adult brain is a coconut. Its meat and milk are enclosed in its thick husk and a hard inner shell. Just like the coconut meat, the human brain is protected by the hard bone of skull. This shield safeguards not only from a bump on the head but also from chemical toxins. The protecting layer is called the blood-brain layer.
The first six month after birth is a period of extreme vulnerability to toxic exposure. The brain is literally still under construction. This is further complicated by the fact that the blood-brain barrier is not formed right away. The time from birth until twenty-four months is a dangerously critical time for exposure to even the lowest levels of lead.
In the world of a new born baby, environmental lead is present in many places. It may come from the water the baby drinks and the air it breathes. It can be introduced to the baby from diarrhea relief medications, toys it plays with, baby bibs, children’s clothing, strollers and baby cribs. When in doubt if a product contains lead, always check it using a lead test kit.
To protect your baby from neurotoxic exposure always opt for lead-free baby products and toys. Nowadays, these items are readily available and cost as much as their toxic counterparts.
